What’s multimedia?

* Multimedia is media and content that utilizes a combination of different content forms. The term can be used as a noun (a medium with multiple content forms) or as an adjective describing a medium as having multiple content forms. The term is used in contrast to media which only utilize traditional forms of printed or hand-produced text and still graphics. In general, multimedia includes a combination of text, audio, still images, animation, video, and interactivity content forms.

* Multimedia is usually recorded and played, displayed or accessed by information content processing devices, such as computerized and electronic devices, but can also be part of a live performance. Multimedia (as an adjective) also describes electronic media devices used to store and experience multimedia content. Multimedia is similar to traditional mixed media in fine art, but with a broader scope.

* Multimedia represents the convergence of text, pictures, video and sound into a single form. The power of multimedia and the Internet lies in the way in which information is linked.

Usage

* Multimedia finds its application in various areas including, but not limited to, advertisements, art, education, entertainment, engineering, medicine, mathematics, business, scientific research and spatial temporal applications.

What’s Creative technology?

* Creative technology refers to the application of new technology in the arts, leisure and entertainment industries.

* There are many interesting courses within creative technology to equip students with specific skills in areas like web design, computer graphics, computer animation, computer games, music technology, video and virtual reality.

* ‘In the University of Portsmouth, students can expect to do a lot of programming (eg artificial intelligence application or specialist programming for games) as well as study artistic subjects (design, music, film) when they take up a course in the Creative Technologies Department,’ says Dr Hand.

Multimedia in Design

* For students who would like to combine computing and multimedia can opt for courses like computer animation and digital media.

* Multimedia Design emphasizes information technology and computing to create animation, special effects, sound production, 3-D modelling, internet authoring, game design and more.  Whether it’s building a corporate presence on the web or designing the new formats for interactive television, multimedia design is central to creatively engaging an audience.

* you will learn to build websites, installation arts, create flash animations, interactive CD-ROMs, motion graphics, short films, 3D modelling and etc. These trainings intend to provide you with hands-on experience alongside the media revolution and allow you to discover design solutions incorporating creativity and IT sense.

Multimedia in Computing

* ‘Students who want to stretch their programming abilities to a wider range of programming should consider doing the BSc in Multimedia Programming. This course focuses on programming solely, unlike other courses in creative technologies which emphasise the artistic elements of the applications,’ explains Dr Hand.

* Like the internet, multimedia applications have made a tremendous impact on industry, commerce, education and society. You will have the opportunity to develop skills in analysis, design, implementation and evaluation of many aspects of multimedia computing using new and established techniques and software tools. This programme combines software engineering skills with information systems development in the context of building interactive multimedia applications.

Multimedia in Virtual Reality

* MM and VR are the means to an end - handling (integrating, storing, accessing and viewing) a multitude of spatial data using a variety of tools.

Can be considered under the general heading of visualisation

Multimedia in Communication

We are always seeking to make our communications more effective regardless of what media we are using: text, graphs, images, sound, animations and video. The Internet with its ability to carry information in all its forms has brought new emphasis in the use of multiple media in communicating our messages. The use of multiple media has become easier with computing and the many tools that have been developed for manipulating different forms of information.

* The key factor is that computers make the creation of multimedia communications, art, games and events much easier.

* The emphasis in the use of multimedia in communications comes from the fact that it appeals to most of our senses. If we hear, read and see, it is likely that our understanding of the message intended will increase.

* This is the appeal of television, movies and now what we call multimedia communications.

Web Development

* Since the internet has had a tremendous impact on industry, commerce, education and society, focusing on web development will allow you to develop skills in analysis, design, implementation and evaluation of many aspects of web development using current techniques and software tools.

* This programme combines software production skills with web applications in the context of web development.

Strategic

* What multimedia graduates can do is in part determined by the emphasis of the courses that they took, but generally they are able to do: multimedia design, multimedia programming, website design, webmaster duties, multimedia presentations, and advertising. Depending on their specialisation, they might also be able to do systems development or marketing campaigns. Students are likely to get jobs in one of the areas mentioned.

*Ultimately the key skills that a multimedia graduate must have are multimedia design skills and be fully conversant with multimedia tools.

Dr Hand believes that all the courses in the creative technologies should emphasise project management skills. ‘Students will learn to work in teams, manage time to meet project deadlines and construct a product such as music CDs, websites or even events like fashion shows. In addition, some courses will involve marketing and publicity aspects, for instance courses in Enterprise Dynamics. All these skills are as important as theoretical knowledge because these skills are what employers look for in graduates nowadays,’ concludes Dr Hand.
