Case Study

A NEW BUSINESS IN THE MAKING

Jeanne Tan has just retired as a social worker in the government sector and plans to open a business for herself. She has identified a retirement home as her new business venture and one that is going to be run with a difference for the middle income group.

A private retirement home can be characterised as follows :

  • A  24-hour residential concern for the elderly aged 60 and above.
  • Residents comprise elderly men and women who are moderately active with some or no health problems.
  • A purely service oriented concern that covers accommodation, recreation, food and beverage, healthcare, physiotherapy, medical consultation and indoor/outdoor activities.
  • Includes a mix of elderly men and women from age 60 and above.
  • Caregivers are in attendance round the clock.
  • Enjoys the facility of voluntary service from the public for social work among the elderly.
  • Medical attention can be received from an in-house doctor or from the nearby hospitals/clinics.
  • Friends, strangers and relatives may visit anytime or during visiting hours as prescribed by the management.

 Questions

       1.      What would be the aims and objectives of the business Jeanne Tan is planning to operate? ( 10 marks )

2.      In your opinion, what forces in the business environment could potentially affect Jeanne Tan’s business? Justify your answer. ( 20 marks )

1.

Aims

Jeanne Tan’s aims and objectives that planning to operate in her business would be

social & community as aim which like general social aim of donations and sponsorship. Reason of that, because she needed a purely service which covers food, beverage, healthcare, medical consultation for the retirement home. (Learnfinity,2009)

Moreover, is to provided throughout 24 hours residential concern towards elderly aged 60 and above for personal wishes and requirements needed. (EBE,2007) This can be seen through as Jeanne Tan’s needs residents which are elderly men and women with no health problems for handling this. Her aim mostly to provide a high quality specialist caring for elderly aged 60 and above in a good environment of living. She also aim for maximizing profits as allow her business to survive. (Learnfinity,2009) As mentioned she just retired from government sector,so is easy for her in this aim to be success. In addition, she want’s to give a home service to elderly’s care for elderly’s family, relatives and friends to visit them in retirement home.

Objectives

Her objectives are to be providing systematic assessment of elderly’s mental, physical and social care in her company. (EBE,2007) For this strategic objective can be see as she needs caregivers are in attendance round the clock  for punctual and systematic. Futuremore,to enable the development of elderly’s potential till optimum for achieving maximum quality of life such as mental, physical and social. (EBE,2007)  Jeanne Tan’s also concern of providing service as accommodation, recreation, physiotherapy, indoor/outdoor activities to achieve this objective.Last,as she to ensure the volunteers enjoy and train them in voluntary service among elderly. Her tactical objective also to helping others elderly as well.

2.

In my opinion, many forces in business environment could affected Jeanne Tan’s business. Two factors might affected which refer to internal and external factors.

Internal

These factors as Jeanne’s can control it.In question number one, aims and objectives are clearly stated.Organisational objectives and business activities might affect if she do not clear about them. She already organize what’s she needs and do for her company.Resources and cost structure might a factor to affect Jeanne’s Tan business as she need money for these. This factor seem not a problem for her as she retired from government sector might allow her to borrow money to ensure her plan is not wasted. This to avoid risk of half way projects as well if she do not look at this factor. Labours could potential affected her business as she do not take youngster to take care elderly. Then, medical attention might not provided if there’s no hospitals/clinics near by but in-house doctor is require. (Learnfinity,2009)

External (PEST)

In Political factors might affect as there’s regulations from the government. She need to municipality her company first in order to get licence. If she plans to operate in Malaysia it cost about RM1000.Moreover,she needs to register at Registration Fee of Business (ROB) bout RM60.Jeanne Tan also can’t run away from taxation which she started as sole trader business.(Learnfinity,2009) Older people are often more affected by, and take longer to recover from sicknesses, such as influenza. (Factors affect….pg.1)This statement can affect her business grow up as they need to take care for they illness referring as political issue. Adults aged 75 and over had a disability rate of 661 per 1000; with over half the people in this age group (550 per 1000) having a disability requiring assistance. (Factors affect….) Issue of this bring impact Jeanne’s business as elderly can’t really live independent but need caring as her company, retirement home.A large number of reports and publications, including the New Zealand report Active for Life (1998), suggest suitable activities for older people. (Factors affect….pg.5)These range from gardening, swimming and using a wheelchair to walking. From this issue,Jeanne’s business would be beter improve as she provided equirements for elderly’s activities. For Americans, they remained at work until age 65 which written in law before. (Factors affect….)So,is difficult for Jeanne’s attract American for coming in retirement home if she open in America.

Social factors can be see for ageing can involve isolation from family and friends, including the loss of peers. (Factors affect….pg.1)So,is better elderly to go for retirement home to avoid loss & isolation in they personal view as factor of going Jeanne’s company. For reference groups among professional work such as law, doctor and more will tend to send they parents into retirement home as they no time to take care of.In they perception, think of retirement home has a better workers to take care ratherly themselves to do the job.Basic on demographics in Malaysia, retirement age is lower which around 50 and above only compare American. (Kalita.B, 2007)So,the chance to getting Malaysian customer would be higher than American.Well, for Malaysia’s culture still not really good to allow their parents into retirement home. So,they tend to take care although buzy which might affect Jeanne Tan’s retirement home.Similar-to-me effect occurs when they think “If you’re like me, you must be pretty good.”As a result the workers have more positive relationship towards customer.

(Baron.G,2003)

Economic factor found as in year 2008,many countries economic really go down and affect one of the largest retirement home provider,Oregon. It happens as the real estate slump has dampened rates of retirement home occupancy and bank lending last year. It stated that they having financial troubles and blamed outside factors such as jumpy lenders and national housing woes. (Manning.J,Sullivan.J, 2008) Impact of this news, might give family of elderly panic feeling, which they want their parents/elderly to be safe and take care of.

Many unemployement exist during last year as it affected inflation of ecomonic most of the countries include Malaysia. However,Malaysia stil consider stable in economic til today. So,is not a big problem for her to operate now as Capitalist which private ownership of property exists.

Last factor that can’t be miss out as will affect Jeanne’s business is technology. As technology keep on changing very brisk but is efficiency to use as the way to help her business.Jeanne Tan may have CCTV as looking around the volunteers either take care of elderly or something else.Abusing can be avoid as those volunteers afraid of doing that because there’s CCTV might record and kick them from the job.LCD TV,which help to save place of placing medicine and others. The GRAM software attempts to foster inclusion of medication monitoring into the patient’s plan of care to proactively identify and prevent potential medication-related problems. (Kate L.Lapane,Cameron.K,Feinberg J) This software means,it can attempt and monitoring patient’s plan in form of medicine and prevent of giving medicine problems.Throught out this,Jeanne Tan improve medicine for the elderly health as well. She also can create a web page of her company for promoting her retirement home on net to those searching retirement home for they parents.
